Jungle Harmony Retreat

Jungle Harmony Retreat

Co-facilitated by Christine Lee & Caroline Owen

Join yoga teacher, psychotherapist, and life coach, Christine Lee, and yoga teacher, yoga therapist, and yoga teacher trainer, Caroline Owen for a week-long tropical retreat.

Your retreat is held in a remote area of the Guanacaste jungle surrounded by pristine forest, exhilarating mountain views, tropical birds and monkeys, and undeveloped beaches. Hacienda Del Sol is located in the largest of only 5 blue zones in the world where people here live past 100 years old at 10 times the average, with an increased quality of life. Science might still not fully comprehend why this is, but our souls grasp this the second we step into it.

The grounds at Hacienda Del Sol feature some of the most powerful superfoods on the planet growing ornamentally in their gardens, and a menu that forever shatters the notion that healthy food can’t be mouth-watering. It also features a salt water pothole of a pool that softens the armours created by daily stress.

The land surrounding Hacienda Del Sol and the resort itself are enough to make your stay an incredible and life-changing experience, yet this retreat also features jungle hikes, a sunset boat cruise, and several skillful offerings per day from two experienced and dedicated practitioners.

Christine LeeChristine Lee (Psychotherapist / Life Coach / Yoga Teacher)

Christine Lee has been practicing yoga since 1999 and teaching since 2007. She has studied with senior teachers of the Anusara tradition, and draws from principles of Iyengar, Ashtanga, and Bikram yoga in her teachings. Christine has studied and taught in India, Australia, Costa Rica, Belize, Guatemala, United States, and across Canada. She offers a skillful, alignment-based approach to vinyasa (flow) yoga, in addition to a gentler yin-based style of teaching.

A natural outgrowth of Christine’s personal journey in yoga has included a deep exploration into personal development and somatic psychology and she now works full time as a life coach and psychotherapist in private practice. Somatic therapy is a body-based approach to therapeutic and spiritual work that can reach areas not always affected by talk therapy. It is a natural approach to healing that increases resiliency and helps resolve physical, mental and emotional disturbances.

On this retreat, Christine will share techniques and tools for personal exploration, and information about the biological basis of somatic psychology and how patterns of behaviours, physiological symptoms, and intrusive mental patterns can be shifted and healed. Please note that this is not group therapy—you will never be required to share your personal stories in front of the group. It is a workshop-based format for you to seek understanding and engage in personal, inner-exploration. Activities are led in a safe, gentle manner and participation is always optional. In somatic approaches we focus on the sensations beneath the stories in order to support self-regulation and the resolution of symptoms.

Caroline Owen (Yoga Teacher / Yoga Therapist / Yoga Teacher Trainer)

Over the past 25 years, Caroline Owen has traveled internationally, both as a student and teacher of yoga, as well as an outdoor adventure guide (whitewater canoeing, horseback riding, alpine hiking). Caroline completed yoga teacher training in 1991 and went on to study with Esther Myers (Scaravelli style). She learned Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga in Mysore, India, Canada and the U.S., and ultimately found her heart’s path through the study of yoga therapy yoga philosophy, Vedic chant and Sanskrit with TKV Desikachar, author of “The Heart of Yoga” and son of the famous “grandfather of modern yoga,” T. Krishnamacharya. In 2005, Caroline set down roots in Norwood, Ontario, opening Wavelengths Yoga Studio and School shortly after. She offers advanced yoga teacher trainings and continuing education workshops and trainings for yoga teachers.

On this retreat, as well as offering creative asana practices, Caroline’s offerings will also include an exploration into the most relevant aspects of yoga philosophy. In the west, the word “yoga” has become synonymous with the “postures” of yoga, but this is only one aspect of traditional yoga practice, which also includes lifestyle choices, breath practices, meditation, chanting, visualization, symbolic gestures, and study of the ancient texts.

In her quest to more deeply understand yoga, herself, and her relationships, Caroline has sincerely studied many of these less well-known aspects of yoga, with some of the greatest living masters of yoga. What has emerged from her explorations is a great love of yoga philosophy through study and chanting.

Caroline shares with us a distillation of the practical wisdom of the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali and the Bhagavad Gita, two of the most well-known and beloved texts of yoga philosophy. Both texts, while difficult to comprehend on their own without the guidance of a teacher, contain abundant insight into human psychology. They also offer practical advice on how to overcome the most challenging of our human tendencies, and how to avoid continuing to make the same mistakes over and over again. In this retreat, these insights are shared through contemplation, group discussion, visualization and class practice themes.

Another aspect of Caroline’s exploration into the deeper realms of yoga is a study of Vedic chanting (dating back approximately 5,000 years, and was the sole means of handing down wisdom from teacher to student for millennia). Caroline has dedicated the past several years to studying this form of art and communication with North America’s leading experts in Vedic Chant and Sanskrit language. She often weaves simple chants into her yoga practices. There is never any pressure for students to participate in the chanting, but they are invited to do so if they feel comfortable. One of the beloved aspects of all of Caroline’s yoga classes is her deeply relaxing guided meditations which often include long passages chanted from the Vedas. The vibration of the chants is transmitted heart to heart, and there is a profound healing quality to not only the chants themselves, but the magic of being sung the most positive and beautiful messages while in a deep state of relaxation.
