2013 welcomed not only a new self-sustainability initiative here on the grounds at Hacienda Del Sol, but also our new gardener extraordinaire Terry!
Since December of last year, Terry has been working tirelessly to develop a fruit and vegetable patch of epic proportions! It is our high hope that the kitchen here at Hacienda can become 80% self-supplied via this close proximity planting; and so far things are looking lush!
What’s growing on:
- mustard greens
- swiss chard
- sweet corn
- and more!
And, not only are we growing a plethora of greens and other goods, but Terry has also integrated our very own BIO CHAR system to aid in the ongoing need for nutrient-dense compost/mulch required to maintain the beds, while at the same time solving the issue of coconut husk carcass collection. These hard to break down casings litter the compost area, and so Terry took up the challenge to clean up the cocos, using a unique oven of sorts to torch the husks into an ash. This ash, when combined with a precise mix of chicken manure, calcium, salts, and rock phosphate, becomes a perfectly potent time-release fertilizer that just may be the secret to our seeding here in the jungle!
Super cool! Thanks Terry, and stay tuned for our next harvest update!
