RECIPE: Moringa Detox Shots

The way you start your morning can really lay the groundwork for how you spend the rest of the day.  Establishing healthful a.m. rituals is a great first step towards maintaining overall wellness.  Book-ending your day with some before-bed relaxation rituals is also helpful in encouraging optimal sleep and therefore radical regeneration and rejuvenation! Not only is taking some time for yourself by way of meditation, a short yoga practice, or mindful walk around the neighbourhood a brilliant start, but firing up your body and digestive system with optimal fuel, you are even further ahead of the game! Here at Hacienda we like to start our day with a powerfully potent green shot; one that will alkaline the body, kickstart digestion, but also detox, rebuild, and infuse the cells with a multitude of nutrients.  And no, we are not growing wheat grass here!  What we like to use are the leafy green leaves of the Moringa tree.  Not familiar?  You must check out our last post about this Miracle Tree!  We love to use this indigenous plant in salads, water infusions and more as it is a perfect (superior?) wheat grass substitution in these parts! During our Juice Cleanse and Detox […]

The Miracle Tree!

By Meg Pearson There’s a new powerful plant in town, a green leafy tree that is taking up plenty of space in the brand new Hacienda organic farm! Moringa! The Miracle Tree! This plant is native to the sub-Himalayan areas of India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, and Afghanistan, but lucky for us, it is also thrives here in the Central American tropics, and is one of the most concentrated superfoods on the planet. While the bark, flowers, fruit, seeds, and root are used medicinally, we love the leaves, and that is where we are going to put our focus today!  Rich in protein and amino acids, these green guys have seven times the Vitamin C of oranges, four times the Vitamin A of carrots, 3 times more iron than spinach, and 4 times the calcium in milk.   Add some serious doses of Vitamin B, Vitamin C, and many minerals, and you are looking at one true tremendous food so healthy in fact, that it has been a useful tool for fighting malnutrition in some countries. Not only is this leaf a lovely nutritional powerhouse, but it is also a herbal healer!  In one study, Moringa reduced asthma symptoms and the severity of asthma attacks in adults.  […]

Coconut: Costa Rican Brain Builder?

Close to half of all Americans over the age of 85 have Alzheimer’s disease. At this time there is no cure for this type of dementia that affects memory, thinking, and behaviours, but drug and non-drug treatments may help with both cognitive and behavioral symptoms. Researchers are constantly looking for new treatments to alter the course of the disease and improve the quality of life for people with dementia.

Balancing the Body, Steadying the Scale

The human body is a wonderfully precise machine that constantly seeks a state of equilibrium or homeostasis. In fact, the body’s need for balance is so great that rather than falling apart, it will bend itself backwards, and even accommodate abuse in order to survive. The greatest threat to this state of equilibrium is toxic input via disastrous dietary choices, an erratic lifestyle, chronic stress, constant stimulation of the senses and emotional trauma. And these are just a few of the things that we subject our bodies to daily and still expect to stay in good health. Contrary to popular beliefs, crash or fad diets, pill popping, calorie counting, and rigorous aerobic exercise are not required to keep body weight in check and systems ticking along like clockwork. An overweight or obese body is a body in distress. But the human body is resilient, and it is possible to reverse the processes that led to this state and re-balance the body’s biochemistry to achieve its normal, comfortable, and optimal weight.
